Sewing clubs are popping up all over Brooklyn, giving locals the opportunity to learn how to sew and fix worn clothing even if they don’t own a sewing machine.
Due to the massive amount of electricity and water needed to produce and process fibers into cloth, textile and clothing manufacturing takes a serious toll on the environment. While mending was something our grandparents never thought twice about, our generation has adopted the very unsustainable attitude of wear-tear-and-buy-new. To start living — and wearing — greener, grab your torn tops and head to one of these regular FREE sewing groups: The Mending Circle at the Textile Arts Center — first Thursday of every month, from 6:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. Brooklyn Sews at LaunchPad — every Tuesday from 8 p.m. to 10 p.m. BurdaStyle Brooklyn Sewing Club — meet-up time and place varies, sign up on the website for the latest updates Craft Nights at Etsy Labs — every Monday from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m.
